As for Atlantean soundtracks, Disney developed a kind of Atlantean language for their Atlantis movie (I believe they hired the Klingon guy). But that isn't relevant for this list, I guess.
Ah...so I am not the only one drooling for an Akallabeth movie? Forget _The Hobbit_; the proper prequel to the Jackson Trilogy should be WESTERNESSE (the only possible title which the ignorant masses can properly pronounce).
Narrated by Isildur (in the very last moment of the movie we learn that the whole thing is a looong flashback, his last thoughts as he watches the One Ring slip away into the river...not exactly a Hollywood ending, but that is probably a good thing).
Opening scenes: Dark screen as Isildur's voice provides a (very short) synopsis of the entire Silmarillion. The world is created by one Eru Iluvatar, the One Father of All. Certain almost godlike spirits enter it at the beginning of time "to build it according to the vision Iluvatar had set before them -- they are the Valar, the Powers of the World". (Note: The actor chosen to play Isildur MUST learn how to pronounce "Valar". The same
goes for the rest of the cast. Not impressed by Liv Tyler's pronunciation of this word in TT...)
Fleeting scenes of a primeval age. Lava and smoke. Isildur tells us that one of the Valar rebelled against Eru Iluvatar and claimed all the world for himself. Therefore "his name is no longer spoken and the Elves will only call him Morgoth, the Dark Enemy". (We cunningly withhold the name Melkor for a while, so that the ignorants in the audience won't know who Melkor is when Sauron first mentions that name later!) Eventually, despite Morgoth's best efforts, the world is fashioned and made firm by the faithful Valar. (Brief glimpse of the Lamps here, illuminating a lush landscape? No detailed explanation necessary; the fans will know what they are seeing and the ignorants will still think it looks cool.)
Under a starlit sky, by the waters of Cuivienen, the Elves awake in the world (one says _ele!_). "They are the Firstborn, to whom Iluvatar the Father of All has given the gift of eternal life." (Repeat the translation of "Iluvatar" so many times that the dupes in the audience actually gather that it is God we are talking about here. There are so many basic concepts we need to educate the audience about already in the prologue...) The Valar invite the Elves to come to the Blessed Realm in the Uttermost West (we'll throw in the names of Valinor and maybe even Aman a few times during the movie, but mostly we'll talk about "the Blessed Realm" since A) the English-speaking actors will have trouble pronouncing either Valinor or
Aman correctly and B) we mustn't confuse the audience with too many names...notice how Gandalf is NEVER called Mithrandir in the Jackson movies, though in TT he briefly mentions that they used to call him "the grey pilgrim").
Brief glimpse of the Blessed Realm, with the Two Trees and all (again: no detailed explanation necessary; the fans will know what they are seeing and the ignorants will still...you know the rest). Narrator (Isildur): "Of all the children of this world, none are wiser or fairer than the High Elves that were taught by the Powers in their own realm." (Ominous music:) "But in the end, the evil of Morgoth reached even into the holy realm and he
poisoned the minds of the Elves with his lies and stole their greatest treasures." (Don't mention the Silmarils by name; then the whole thing becomes too complicated.) "Then the Elves forsook the Valar and went back to Middle-earth to pursue Morgoth with undying hatred and take back what he
had stolen." All right, so it was actually just the Noldor, but again, we must keep things simple here.
KABOOM! The screen explodes into a battle making the efforts of the Last Alliance (as seen at the beginning of Jackson's Fellowship movie) look like a kids' quarrel in their sandbox in comparison. We ZOOM OUT from a band of Elves crying _auta i lуme!_ and look towards the dark, formless towers of Thangorodrim in the horizon. The vast plain before Morgoth's stronghold is full of MILLIONS of Elves and Orcs fighting. There are dragons and balrogs (hundreds of them, not just the poor lonesome fellow we saw on the bridge of Khazad-dum). Isildur (as narrator) tells us that for centuries the Elves fought against Morgoth and his creatures. At some point during the battle
scenes the camera finds Sauron, in full armor as seen at the beginning of Jackson's _Fellowship_: "Greatest of all the servants of Morgoth was the foul necromancer whom the Elves called Sauron, for in all the vast works and cunning deceits of Morgoth in this world, Sauron had a part."
About this point it should be mentioned that another race awoke in the world and joined the Elves in the battle against Morgoth: "They were Mortal Men, our own kind, to whom Iluvatar has given the gift of death." (At this point, the audience hopefully remembers that Iluvatar is God.)
Can we show the Haudh-en-Dengin, a mountain of corpses, or will that influence the PG rating? Well, we are going to show human sacrifice later, so maybe the studio bosses should realize right from the start that they won't be able to grab the money of the kids before the DVD and video release. Anyhow: Isildur tells us that all the efforts of Elves and Men were in vain, for though he was fallen, Morgoth was still a Vala and could
not be overthrown by any lesser power. "But when the victory of Morgoth was almost complete, the great mariner Earendil took his ship and sailed into the Uttermost West." (Make sure not to call Earendil the Ancient Mariner.)
"He came before the Powers of the World and begged the Valar to forgive the Elves that had forsaken them and take pity on the mortal race of Men, so that the Two Kindreds would not utterly perish by the malice of Morgoth."
(Just show the ship and then a kneeling figure in a bright light -- DON'T even think about showing the Valar themselves, even if Tollers did write that they often appeared in human-like shapes. On-screen Valar would be anticlimatic no matter how you tried to represent them.) "And his prayer was heard."
Not quite sure how to show the War of Wrath, but surely we can afford some semi-surrealistic scenes of utter cataclysm. "All the ancient Elven realms in the West of Middle-earth were destroyed and sank beneath the sea, but the Host of the West was victorious. And the Valar captured Morgoth, the
Power of Terror and of Hate, and trust him into the timeless void beyond the world, and the Elves thought evil was ended forever -- and they were wrong." (Yes, the last words are of course what Elrond said during the Council. We'll salvage much dialogue from LotR -- there are tons of good stuff that Jackson didn't use, and SOMEBODY ought to say these lines in the movies as well!)
"After the Great Battle and the overthrow of Morgoth, the Valar counciled the Elves to return to the Blessed Realm in the Uttermost West, and many of them did go back. But also to Mortal Men, who had fought and suffered alongside the Elves in the war against Morgoth, rich reward was given. For though no mortal could ever come to the undying lands in the West, the
Valar raised a new land out of the sea and made it rich and green, and this vast island they gave to our fathers." (Fleeting images of people in boats approaching an inviting coast; the Meneltarma glows in a golden haze.)
"And tired after the endless war, our fathers left Middle-earth and came over the sea and found the fair land that was prepared for them, and they were glad. And since this was now the westernmost of all mortal lands, they called it Westernesse, or in the Elvish tongue Numenor." (Perhaps we can have "Westernesse" and "Numenor" coexisting without the audience getting hopelessly confused, but forget about "Elenna", "Anadune", "Vinya" and all the other names the Professor lavishly bestowed upon Numenor.) "Such is the
story, handed down to us through thousands of years, of the origin of our people and of the land that we loved. So it began. This is the story, even as Elendil my father wrote it down, of how it ended..." (End of Prologue. Opening credits. We are now about ten minutes into our 3-hour epic, and finally the main story can begin! And yes, somewhere the Professor did note
that it was Elendil who wrote the Akallabeth.)
Do you want me to rant on, complete with projected Elvish dialogue to keep this vaguely on-topic, or what? But one thing is clear: Paradoxically, there can hardly be even one word of Adunaic in this film! Adunaic has to be represented by English throughout, since this is the language the main characters will be speaking. So much for the Atlantean soundtrack! But when
the Great Wave finally rolls over the land, we can perhaps have the choir sing "Anadinк! Ziran! Hikallaba!"
